E-WMS - Scanning combination

WMS documentation

Introduction

This document describes the E-WMS functionality 'Scanning combination'

Description

Scanning combination is a setting which can be enabled in most scanner settings screens in Exact Globe menu System, E-WMS, Scanners.

Scanning combination is not the same as GS1-128 (EAN128), but can be regarded as a simplified version of GS1-128, and specific for E-WMS.

The rules or settings for GS1-128 do not apply, and are not related, to 'scanning combination'.

This functionality allows you to scan bar codes, in which item code and serial/batch number are combined in one bar code, separated by a specific character.

When 'scanning combination' is enabled, also the setting 'dividing character' has to be configured.

Sample of a bar code used with 'scanning combination':

When scanning this bar code without 'scanning combination' enabled, E-WMS would respond with error message "item code AB1010/E110406 not found".

By enabling scanning combination and also configuring the 'dividing character' as '/', this bar code will now be split automatically into item code (AB1010) and serial/batch number ('E110406').

The 'dividing character' has to meet these requirements:

  • the character can be printed as part of the bar code (this may require e.g. a CODE39-Full ASCII type barcode)
  • the character can be scanned by the hand terminal
  • the character is not used in item codes or serial/batch numbers
  • the character can not also be used as 'prefix' or 'suffix' character, when usage of prefix/suffix is enabled

'Scanning combination' is supported both in WMS ASP and in older WMS CAB client.

Sample

The WMS Inventory settings (in menu System, E-WMS, Scanners, Stock inventory settings) are configured to use scanning combination, and use '/' as dividing character.

Starting Inventory in WMSclient, after entry of 'warehouse' and 'location', bar code "1000B/BATCH01" is scanned:

And automatically, the scan is divided into item code '1000B' and batch number 'BATCH01'.
